Between August 24 to 28, 2025, the FRODDO project participated in the ITS World Congress 2025, one of the largest global gatherings showcasing innovation and future trends in smart mobility and transport systems.

Representing the project on behalf of ERTICO – ITS Europe, the project’s coordinator, Dr. Nikos Tsampieris highlighted FRODDO’s vision and advancements in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions for Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM). Through two high-level speeches, Dr. Tsampieris presented how FRODDO is pushing the boundaries of resilient, accurate, and multi-sensor navigation for safe and sustainable mobility.

On Sunday, August 24, during the session SIS10: Space Based Technologies for PNT in Road Mobility – The European Perspective, Dr. Tsampieris introduced the talk “Infrastructure-enabled PNT solutions for increased ODD continuity – the FRODDO approach.” He outlined how the project integrates 5G connectivity, inertial measurement units, and multi-sensor fusion at the Athens pilot site, ensuring higher accuracy and reliability even in challenging environments such as tunnels or urban canyons. The session shed light on Europe’s efforts to strengthen PNT systems by combining multi-constellation GNSS, alternative PNT sources, and cybersecurity frameworks to support next-generation CCAM applications.

Later, on Thursday, August 28, Dr. Tsampieris contributed to the session SIS66: Traffic Efficiency and Safety Through CCAM: Enhancing Physical and Digital Infrastructure (PDI) in Europe, Canada and the US, with the presentation “A Federated cyber-physical infrastructure for ODD continuity (FRODDO).” This intervention highlighted how FRODDO’s federated approach to Physical and Digital Infrastructure (PDI) enables a seamless integration of CCAM technologies across urban areas, improving traffic efficiency, enhancing road safety, and fostering automation readiness.

FRODDO’s presence at #ITSWC2025 underlined the project’s central role in advancing next-generation mobility systems in Europe and beyond. By demonstrating its innovative pilots and infrastructure-enabled solutions, the project contributes not only to technological breakthroughs in positioning and connectivity but also to the broader goal of building a safer, greener, and more resilient mobility ecosystem.

The FRODDO project successfully demonstrated its cutting-edge solutions for connected and automated vehicles at the 16th ITS European Congress in Seville, one of Europe's leading events on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Represented by project partners ERTICO and Netcompany, FRODDO engaged with a wide international audience through live demonstrations at the exhibition booths and expert presentations in two high-profile Special Interest Sessions.

Advancing Road Safety for Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs)

In the session “Traffic Efficiency and Safety for VRUs and Emergency Response (SIS 24)”, Dr. Nikolaos Tsampieris, FRODDO Project Coordinator, presented how the project is developing solutions to enhance safety for Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

By combining advanced sensing technologies, hybrid Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and federated Digital Twin (DT) environments, FRODDO is creating adaptive systems that respond in real time to complex and dynamically changing road conditions. These technologies, currently under validation in live pilot sites, aim to significantly reduce accident risks by enabling more intelligent and responsive traffic ecosystems, particularly where VRUs face higher exposure to potential hazards.

Space-Based Technologies and Precision PNT for CCAM

In the second session, “Space-based Technologies for PNT in Road Mobility (SIS 51)”, Dr. Tsampieris presented FRODDO’s research on advancing Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions—critical for the reliable deployment of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) systems across European road networks.

The presentation focused on FRODDO’s development of high-precision PNT engines that leverage the latest advancements in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and 5G technologies. The system targets positioning accuracy of 0.2 meters with 99.9% availability and continuity, addressing significant challenges like GNSS signal degradation in urban canyons, tunnels, and other GNSS-denied environments.

Importantly, this session featured valuable contributions from European Space Agency (ESA) experts and fellow panelists, who shared critical insights into how space-based technologies are advancing positioning accuracy and reliability for connected mobility solutions. Their expertise underscored the importance of multi-source data fusion and cross-sector collaboration in enabling next-generation automated driving and intelligent transport infrastructure.

High Engagement and Positive Industry Reception

Throughout the congress, the FRODDO project attracted significant interest from a diverse audience of mobility experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and technology providers, reflecting the growing global interest in connected vehicle ecosystems and advanced traffic management solutions. The ERTICO and Netcompany exhibition booths served as active networking hubs, providing deeper insights into FRODDO’s innovative approach to overcoming today’s mobility challenges.

From 13-15 May, the FRODDO project participated in the highly anticipated EUCAD 2025 event, hosted in the scenic town of Ispra, Italy. This key event gathered over 500 industry experts, policymakers, and innovators focused on Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility (CCAM).

Positioned prominently in the exhibition hall alongside 28 other influential CCAM projects and initiatives, FRODDO proudly showcased its latest advancements in smart and connected mobility. Throughout the three-day event, the team had the invaluable opportunity to highlight the project's significant progress, engage in meaningful idea exchanges, and foster stronger collaborative ties with colleagues from across Europe and beyond.

A highlight of our participation included insightful discussions with representatives from the European Commission, allowing us to directly align our project goals with broader European mobility strategies. Furthermore, FRODDO took a leading role in organizing a collaborative session with the iCCAMTech Cluster, joining forces with projects EVENTS, PODIUM, CONDUCTOR, iEXODDUS, and AITHENA. This session proved instrumental in establishing a unified approach towards future CCAM developments and promoting robust knowledge sharing.

Our involvement at EUCAD 2025 was not only a testament to FRODDO’s commitment to innovation and collaboration but also a significant step towards a smarter, more connected future for mobility in Europe.

In a significant step toward advancing road safety, the EU Road Safety Cluster successfully hosted its inaugural webinar last week, gathering more than 90 stakeholders from diverse sectors. Co-organized by six pioneering EU projects—SOTERIA, PHOEBE, AI4CCAM, HEIDI, FRODDO, and EVENTS—the webinar shed light on the critical challenges faced by vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists, presenting innovative solutions that promise safer streets for all.

Addressing road safety from multiple angles, the webinar underscored key topics including accident prevention, infrastructure enhancements, improved communication between road users, and leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite-based systems.

Representing FRODDO, the National Technical University of Athens showcased the project's ambitious approach to transforming automated and connected mobility. FRODDO is dedicated to creating safer, smarter, and adaptable transportation systems through cutting-edge technologies such as advanced sensing, AI integration, and digital twin simulations. By prioritizing user safety and societal impact, FRODDO aims to deliver a resilient and scalable framework for automated vehicles.

Each project provided valuable insights into their specialized strategies:

SOTERIA (University of Deusto) harnesses vehicle, cellphone, and micro-mobility data with machine learning to predict and prevent unsafe situations, even before accidents occur.
PHOEBE (iRAP) develops human-centered predictive safety frameworks by integrating traffic simulations, behavior analysis, and mobility modeling to serve as templates for safer European cities.
AI4CCAM (Simula Research Lab) emphasizes user acceptance and citizen engagement to assess automated driving through advanced AI methodologies.
HEIDI (Virtual Vehicle Research) enhances communication between vehicles and VRUs, ensuring clear understanding and safe interaction, facilitating the transition to automated vehicles.
EVENTS (ICCS) tackles the complexities automated vehicles face in unpredictable environments, developing robust perception systems to maintain safety and reliability.

The interactive Q&A session highlighted critical discussions around Operational Design Domains (ODDs), data accessibility, user-centered communication technologies, and the ongoing evolution of automotive design and sensor technologies. Participants expressed particular interest in understanding how dynamically extending ODDs could improve road safety, the standardization of communication interfaces in automated vehicles, and the adaptability of AI predictions regarding pedestrian behaviors.

This webinar marked a milestone in collaborative efforts among EU projects, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive view of the cutting-edge innovations and cooperative approaches shaping the future of road safety.

FRODDO at 30th ITS World Congress

The 30th ITS World Congress, held from September 16-20 in Dubai, highlighted advancements in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and smart mobility, focusing on automated mobility, clean energy, urban transportation, and logistics innovations. Over five days, the event emphasized collaboration and technology’s role in shaping the future of transport.

At the ERTICO European Pavillion, attendees had a chance to explore active EU-funded and co-funded projects, including FRODDO. Representatives of the FRODDO project actively engaged with stakeholders and visitors, discussing key topics such as automated mobility, clean energy, and AI-driven urban transportation.

Automated mobility was a major theme, with over 50 papers and 30 sessions. While development is global, regional differences shape use cases. Asia-Pacific led with 40% of submissions, focusing on shared, on-demand services like automated ride-pooling. Deployment has been slower than expected, and no standard business model exists, but safety, regulatory frameworks, and public acceptance remain key to its future success.

Clean mobility sessions explored the role of intelligent systems in reducing emissions and promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and alternative fuels. As cities work to cut greenhouse gases and improve air quality, clean mobility has shifted from a niche topic to a mainstream priority.

Urban mobility discussions centered on AI for traffic management, predictive technologies, and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. AI’s role in improving traffic and safety, including pedestrian detection, was highlighted. Digital twins—virtual models of transport systems—also gained attention as key to future planning.

Additionally, the Congress also explored future logistics solutions, such as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for cargo and 6G communication technologies for better connectivity in remote areas. The discussions underscored the growing demand for adaptable, future-proof solutions in both passenger and goods transport.

Overall, the topics and discussions at the 30th ITS World Congress closely aligned with the objectives and vision of the FRODDO project. Key themes such as automated mobility, AI-driven solutions, digital twin environments, and secure V2X communication reflected FRODDO’s focus on enhancing vehicle safety, adaptability, and real-time decision-making capabilities. The Congress’s emphasis on sustainable transportation, reducing emissions, and improving traffic management through intelligent systems directly resonated with FRODDO’s goal of creating a safer, more efficient, and user-centric transportation ecosystem. This alignment underscores FRODDO’s contribution to the broader vision of smart mobility.

Experts stressed that the future of transportation is data-driven, automated, and digitally integrated, with AI playing a critical role. This also aligns with FRODDO’s vision of a future where automated an connected vehicles can safely navigate any road or environmental condition and are a seamless part of everyday life.
