We would like to announce that the FRODDO project has officially joined the newly established EU cluster on Road Safety in Complex Urban Environments as of December 2024. This strategic collaboration brings together some of the most ambitious European initiatives to tackle the challenges of automated mobility, road safety, and the interactions between Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs).
About the FRODDO Project
The FRODDO project is an EU-funded initiative dedicated to enhancing the safety, security, and adaptability of automated mobility in complex urban environments. FRODDO focuses on developing advanced sensing, machine learning (ML), hybrid AI, and simulation-based methodologies to improve the management of Operational Design Domains (ODDs) and ensure seamless, safe, and trustworthy Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) services.
Through a federated digital twin (DT) environment, FRODDO enables real-time data exchange between automated vehicles, infrastructure operators, and road authorities, ensuring that CCAM services operate within dynamic and diverse road conditions. The project also integrates fail-safe design principles to enhance redundancy and resilience, addressing critical factors such as traffic, weather conditions, infrastructure, and cybersecurity risks.
Advancing Road Safety and Automated Mobility
The cluster, first announced in October 2024, unites several EU-funded projects—AI4CCAM, HEIDI, EVENTS, PHOEBE, SOTERIA, and now FRODDO—to develop cutting-edge solutions for safer and more efficient mobility systems. Together, these projects are working towards a safe, inclusive, and resilient urban transport ecosystem, ensuring that emerging automated mobility technologies are not only innovative but also ethical, transparent, and adaptable to real-world complexities.
FRODDO’s inclusion in this forward-thinking initiative strengthens its commitment to improving safety, trust, and efficiency in dynamic urban mobility environments. The project will contribute its expertise in real-time risk detection, AI-powered decision-making, and smart mobility infrastructure to enhance collaborative efforts within the cluster.
The Shared Mission
As part of the cluster, FRODDO aligns with a human-centric, technology-driven approach that focuses on:
-
Ensuring Safe and Inclusive Mobility – Addressing the needs of all road users, particularly vulnerable populations such as pedestrians, cyclists, and individuals with reduced mobility.
-
Leveraging AI for Ethical and Trustworthy Automation – Developing AI-powered models that enhance predictive road safety, while ensuring ethical and transparent decision-making.
-
Utilizing Advanced Simulation and Testing Environments – Integrating hybrid testing frameworks and real-time monitoring systems to assess the performance and safety of automated mobility solutions.
-
Enhancing Scalability and Resilience – Creating adaptable and robust systems that respond effectively to unexpected road events, sensor failures, and evolving urban mobility demands.
Strengthening Collaboration for a Safer Future
By joining forces with leading EU projects, FRODDO will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM). The exchange of insights, research, and technological advancements within the cluster will accelerate progress towards safer and more intelligent urban transport networks across Europe.
